New Interlibrary Loan Service Now Available

The Library has a new interlibrary loan service called ILLIAD available for you and your students to use starting immediately.  This service allows you to make requests and track your request status online through a web page.  ILLIAD also reduces the amount of typing you need to do if you locate something in the EBSCO database that we don’t own.  By choosing the Article Linker option on the EBSCO record the bibliographic information will be input into the correct ILLIAD fields automatically.  To use the features of ILLIAD you will need to create a user account.  Set up of an account may be accomplished by following this link http://illiad.library.umaine.edu/illiad/UPQ/FirstTime.html.  If you have any questions about this new service please don’t hesitate to contact Nancy Fletcher at X9595 or nancy.fletcher@umpi.edu

Collaboration area established on first floor

The Library staff, in conjunction with the IT Dept staff, have created a collaboration area on the first floor of the Library. Located near the conference room the area includes seating, a computer with dual monitors, a vcr/tv, laserdisc player, and dvd player included in the computer. If you need to collaborate on a project, watch a dvd, or create a group presentation, try out the new area. We hope you find it useful. If you would like additional areas like this let us know.

We’ve moved

You may have noticed that we’ve moved to a new blog space.  We were running the blog at Blogger, but have found that our new home suites our needs better.  We’ve also changed to a new name Library News.  We continue to bring information about changes to the UMPI Library and items of interest about libraries from around Aroostook County.

Gardening Exhibit Brought Back

We’ve been asked to bring back the Gardening Exhibit from earlier this spring. Here’s what we said about it earlier. Hope everyone enjoys the reprise of the exhibit.

Just in time for spring greening and Earth Day, Master Gardeners Alice Sheppard and Karen Colburn have created an exhibit about Gardening with Nature. Gardening with nature is philosophy and practice that supports gardening as stewardship of our natural resources. Gardening with nature examples include: building healthy soil using composting techniques rather than commercial fertilizers, limiting chemical pest control, selecting the right plant for the right place, and enhancing habitat for wildlife. The Library exhibit features resources on the ecology of gardening, soil science, landscaping for wildlife, and plant identification. Anyone can garden with nature, and there are many publications and web sites to guide the novice or the expert gardener.

The Gardening with Nature exhibit is part of the ongoing efforts of the University of Maine-Presque Isle Green Campus Action Committee. The Green Campus Action Committee is charged with promoting strategies that limit negative environmental impacts on campus, and maximize benefits to the environment.

The Library exhibit theme was chosen to tie in with our University Day theme, Building Global Respect: Our Environment and Ourselves. University Day, April 16, highlights student projects and campus research. For a schedule of events, go to http://www.umpi.maine.edu/.

New Titles Link Added to Homepage

Several individuals have asked for a listing of recently received items at the library. We’ve added a link on our homepage, in the Find Books and More section, to a listing of material recently added to the collection. We hope it proves useful and enjoyable.
